Roomology: Layered Den with English Touches

March 31, 2012

Roomology – A series where I take a room and break it down into different elements. Analyze along with me and learn to look at interiors in a new way. If you’re able to pinpoint the elements in a room that speak to you, it will be all the easier to re-create the mood you’re after in your own home!

This room is a den in the home of a couple who live in Ohio and love the English look. (Click on the link above to read & see more of their house, it’s so beautiful!)

Textures: I love all the layers in this room, of objects but also textures! Layers of texture are added by the seagrass rug, the book covers, the wooden paddle (I think that’s what it is?) leaning against the wall, the old frame, the terra-cotta pots, the woven side table (just about visible) and the fabrics of the pillow and upholstered chair.

Colors: Gray walls with white painted trim and built-ins is both classic and on trend. Together with blue and brown, it makes for a subdued, natural, comfortable palette. The different blues and browns keep it interesting, no need to have everything match exactly!

Furniture: The blue Chesterfield sofa is the star of this room, but it is combined with a white upholstered chair that looks a lot more casual and it makes the room more eclectic and laid-back. Those two side tables pushed together make a great alternative to a coffee table.

Accessories: The accessories all look collected over time and say ‘English country house’, very much in keeping with the Chesterfield sofa and Union Jack pillow. I love the painting of the woman that is leaning against the wall and the bell jar displays! The bookshelves are styled with a collection of objects that evoke that same collected-over-time feel and antique books – lovely!

What stands out to you in this room?

I love how much personality is in this room! Definitely not a cookie-cutter kind of room that looks the same as everyone else’s, you know? Also, a very small part of this picture, but those little gold framed silhouette pictures on the righthand side are calling out to me! I’ve been obsessed with silhouette art lately :)

I love how that sofa could look rather formal, but they’ve made it cozy and casual with other details in the room.

I really like the trim on the couch (I don’t exactly know what to call the metal studedness) and the two coffee tables and that they look so mobile. I made an active effort to look at the room before I read your comments this time to see if we noticed the same things. Some were definitely the same, but you have a very good eye… I missed so much!! I’ll play “I Spy” a little harder next time…
