Roomology: Soft Blue, Yellow & Red Study

January 31, 2012

RoomologyA series where I take a room and break it down into different elements. It is helpful to learn a way of looking at a photo of a room that enables you to pinpoint what exactly it is that speaks to you. This will help you translate your inspiration into your own space. I am simply sharing some of my own thoughts on the room – what I choose to high-light might be different from what you see in it!

There was something about this room that caught my attention – it has a luminous quality to it. And then I read that it’s Drew Barrymore’s home office designed by Ruthie Sommers and that the photo came from Domino, and I was even more intrigued.

Let’s look at some of the different elements in this room, shall we?

Colors: Blue, red, yellow & brown. The lively palette of primary colors gives this room an energizing vibe, but it is also calming because the colors are soft and the main color on the largest surface (the wall) is light blue. The electric blue vase is a beautiful accent to the soft colors surrounding it!

Shapes: There are lots of round, curving shapes everywhere which makes it very feminine. The rectangular, simple desk adds straight lines.

Patterns: Mostly solid colors, the only patterns is on the upholstery of the desk chair. Too bad it’s hard to see the pattern, it looks very pretty from what I can tell!

Materials: Wood (desk & floor), painted wood (gorgeous red cabinet), marble (pillar, just assuming it’s marble it could be something else), glass (vase), metal (table lamp), fabric (drapery, lamp shade, upholstery on desk chair), leather (leather chair that adds a bit of masculinity together with the desk).

Accessories: Books held up by book ends shaped as dog heads (pretty!), piece of art/tablet on a stand, standing ornament that looks like and artichoke, vase with dried (?) flowers or leaves on a pedestal.

Art: Painted portrait on the wall with simple frame.

Window Treatments: Floor-length drapery in a soft buttery yellow with red trim.

I love how classic this room is, yet anything but stodgy. It has such a feminine vibe but is balanced out with some masculine touches. Do you agree that is has a luminous quality to it? The large window certainly helps but so do the colors, I love that soft buttery yellow!

Hope your day was lovely!

Love the way you broke this room down! This is so helpful … I worked with a staging company a while back and the research says that 87% of the public cannot see a room beyond the way it is decorated right now. This was mostly used in the real estate world in helping stage homes to sell. But it also says that the majority need your help to actually “see” what they love!!

I love red and yellow together because they were (are) my sorority colors so by default I love this room! It’s a bit cramped for my taste though.
