Monday Inspiration: Allegra Hicks

February 1, 2011

This weekend, I went to IDS11, an interior design show in Toronto. It was really fun and I’ll do a re-cap tomorrow of some of the cool things we saw.

One of the things I enjoyed was an interview with designer Allegra Hicks. She talked about how nature inspires her designs.

This is the booth that was at the show with some of her fabrics. I really like how her patterns have a bit of a bohemian feel while being sophisticated, and have a bit of a vintage feel while being modern.

They showed some of the photos of her new book An Eye for Design where photos of her patterns are shown with a photo of what inspired it. It was really fun to see how unexpected elements had been translated into a pattern for a fabric.

For example, the pattern on at the top on the right in this photo is shown side by side in the book with chickens. Kinda like these:

Can you see the chicken feathers in the pattern?

Pretty cool, right? It was fun hearing and seeing how she translates what she sees into a pattern.

Speaking of feathers, there’s more in this photo. I’ve had a photo similar of this sofa and feather wreath for a while in my inspiration files.

And here’s what looks like the same sofa but in a different upholstering and with a different rug. Kinda fun to see the different it makes.

Allegra Hicks also designs home decor objects. I particularly like these candle sticks:

I hope your Monday was great!

That sounds like fun! I love how that explosive red pattern is inspired by chickens — so clever. I hope you’re going to make that feathered wreath in February!!

Ooooh, love all these patterns! Especially the pink + coral + brown one and the raindrop one.
