The Happy Movie

September 2, 2010

I found this video by way of the Style Statement blog and was immediately intrigued. As the name suggests, the movie is about happiness – it looks at happiness around the world and seeks to answer the question about what it is that makes people happy.

For so long, the field of psychology focused on deficiencies and treating those with problems. Happiness was not given the same attention, yet it makes sense to put the same amount of research into what actually makes people thrive. There has been a lot more focus on this in recent years and it truly fascinates me, especially when it is backed up by actual research.

The Happy Movie website states that the movie contains interviews with leading psychologists and neurologists as well as real-life stories from people around the world.

I really like it that it looks at people around the world. It fascinates me that while our western society is prosperous in comparison to many other countries, there are still many who struggle with depression and other forms of unhappiness. I find myself wondering at times how this works in other countries where many people go with less material possessions than we have – how does happiness work there? Are there ways in which we get in our own way when it comes to being happy? I am intrigued to see if the movie will deal with these questions and what its angle will be on it.

Here’s the trailer and a short introduction by the director on the reason of making this movie, which is set to be released in December.

    sounds like an interesting film!

i remember seeing a documentary about the lost boys of sudan- they came over to the us and had jobs, lived in apts, had electricity and all the stuff we take for granted over here…but after months of being here, many of them were feeling sad, missing “home”- they said they missed living with all their “brothers” and that all they do now is work. they really missed the sense of community they had, even in a homeless home situation.

i see so many magazine articles about “how to be happy”- it seems to be an obsession. like there is some place we’re all trying to get to to be happy. i think it’s just one state of being. and honestly, if we were happy all the time, we’d take it for granted. i have lots of moments throughout the day that bring me tons of happiness when i just stop a pay attention…

I saw that movie too that Kerri was referring to, that was a good movie. I think the lack of community is probably the core of our Nations unhappiness. I can’t wait to see the film and what he came up with. Should be interesting. Thanks for leaving a comment on my blog! I did use the Mod Podge on the top of the fabric on the table, it really helps to keep the fabric sealed. I did not use Mod Podge on the wallpaper though, I didn’t know if it would mess up the shine of the silver. Thanks again! Love your blog.
